You might think that forgiveness and mercy are basically the same thing. They are related, and there's a lot of overlap, but there is a distinction. Mercy is specific to when the person in a position to forgive also has power over the other person. And make no mistake about it, God calls us to be powerful. He wants to give you power. We are not here to be weak, to be victims. The Bible says ours is not a spirit of weakness, but of power, love, and a sound mind. We have to be powerful to take on the enemy and advance the Kingdom of God, and do all the things God wants us to do: heal the sick, clothe the poor, feed the hungry, and spread the good news of Christ. So God wants you to be powerful, to be the head and not the tail, to be above and not beneath. But he's not going to give you power if you're going to exercise it like a tyrant, instead of being merciful.
