In Deuteronomy, God says to His people: “I put before you life and death. Choose life.” I love that verse because it tells us there’s no middle ground. You can choose life and prosperity, or you can choose death and destruction. Too often in our world we want to have one foot in and one foot out. For example, we are quick to denounce violence whenever the media highlights one group or another being attacked, and we congratulate ourselves for putting up some silly hashtag slogan (#StopHate!) as though that accomplishes anything, but then we celebrate musicians who make violent music, and actors who make violent movies and television shows, and we buy their products to reward them with wealth, and we mourn them when they die like they're heroes, and we act like there’s no connection whatsoever between the violent culture that we support, and violence in our communities that we condemn. Sorry, it doesn’t work that way. God hates a lukewarm people. Choose one way or the other. Choose life.
